Cherry Stones, Little Necks and Chowders

There’s a place on the road
That can’t be marked by time
Where the fragrance of the salt marsh
It overtakes the scent of pine
There’s a house on stilts in a saw grass meadow
Red-bottom paint on a plywood sign
Cherry Stones, Little Necks and Chowders
You can knock anytime
Six clicks across the brackish water
Across a bridge built by FDR
Wooden planks rumble like thunder
‘Neath the wheels of our car
Billboard scarred the horizon
It told us where to find the best
Fried shrimp in the county
A place for osprey to rest
Parked on the bay side of the island
Somebody whistled an Otis Redding tune
Next to a sign left by Donna
“Please don’t walk on the dune”
Lot of bridges under water
It’s bound to happen over time
'Neath the rubble left by Sandy
I retrieved this memory of mine
Of a place on a road
That can’t be marked by time
Where the fragrance of the salt marsh
It overtakes the scent of pine
There’s a house on stilts in a saw grass meadow
Red-bottom paint on a plywood sign
Cherry Stones, Little Necks and Chowders
Some things don’t change over time
